Kyon Energy and Obton sign framework agreement for battery storage: expansion of 600 MW storage capacity by 2026

- Largest framework agreement for battery storage between project developers and investors in continental Europe

- Large three-digit million sum of investments in German energy infrastructure

Munich and Aarhus (Denmark) June 12, 2023. Kyon Energy, a project and business developer specialized in battery energy storage systems, and Obton, a leading operator in the development and acquisition of solar PV systems, have signed a framework agreement. The two partners have thus decided to expand 600 MW of storage capacity over the next three years. As a result, investments in the high three-digit million range will flow into the German energy infrastructure by 2026. This is the largest framework agreement for battery storage projects between project developers and investors in continental Europe and an important contribution to the success of the energy transition.

Kyon Energy will take over the entire project planning of the battery storage projects, including site development and grid connection planning, building rights development, and layout design. The parties will jointly handle the development of the business model and general contractor up to the turnkey start-up of the battery storage systems. Obton also contributes the financing of the projects and the operation of the completed battery storage systems to the partnership.

The collaboration has already begun. The first project within the framework agreement has achieved ready-to-build status. A battery storage system with a storage capacity of 15.8 MW and a capacity of 32.0 MWh is being built in Tangermünde, Saxony-Anhalt.
Kyon Energy and Obton have also put two joint projects into operation as early as 2022: the battery storage systems at the Bad Düben and Elsteraue sites, which comprise a total of 27.6 MW and 32.4 MWh.

Large-scale battery storage systems play an important role in the energy revolution and in providing flexibility for the power grid. They compensate for the high volatility in electricity generation through renewable energy sources, store excess electricity and feed it in at a later stage as needed and profitably. Fraunhofer ISE Put the demand for such storage systems in Germany at 104 GWh in 2030 - but so far only 1.2 GWh has been covered.

"The framework agreement with Obton is a milestone for the expansion of energy infrastructure in Germany," says Florian Antwerpen, managing director of Kyon Energy. "The addition of 600 MW of storage capacity will significantly increase the flexibility of the networks. We are proud to make this contribution to the success of the energy revolution"

"At Obton, we are very proud to be at the forefront of working with Kyon Energy to ensure the essential flexibility of Germany's energy infrastructure and see this as a natural extension of our solar PV business," says Torsten Lauritsen, Head of Battery Storage at Obton. "With this groundbreaking framework agreement, we are reaffirming our commitment to invest in promoting the green energy transition"
