Kyon Energy sells 116 megawatt hours project in Rhineland-Palatinate to Austrian energy supplier VERBUND

- Battery storage facility in Kettig, Rhineland-Palatinate approved and sold to VERBUND
- The project will provide 50 megawatts of storage capacity and 116 megawatt hours of storage capacity for the German electricity grid
- Realization of the storage project is planned by early 2026

Munich, February 05, 2024 : Kyon Energy, the leading project developer for large-scale battery storage in Germany, has received approval for a new large-scale battery storage facility in Rhineland-Palatinate. The planned facility will be built in Kettig and will have a storage capacity of 50 megawatts and a storage capacity of 116 megawatt hours. Construction of the facility is scheduled to begin in 2025, with commissioning to follow by the end of 2025/beginning of 2026.

The project was sold to Austria's leading energy company VERBUND in December 2023, which will operate the facility on a long-term basis after commissioning. This makes the storage facility in Rhineland-Palatinate part of a comprehensive joint framework agreement between Kyon Energy and VERBUND, under which a total of 300 megawatts of storage capacity is to be realized in the German battery storage market.

The storage facility will provide crucial grid-supporting system services in the electricity grid. It stabilizes the grid frequency by providing control reserve, balances out price peaks by providing flexibility in SPOT and intraday trading and balances out the overall volatility in electricity generation from renewable energies.

"Battery storage systems play a key role in the integration of new renewables into the energy system. We are combining our know-how in the areas of storage and the energy market with our expertise in flexibility marketing. In doing so, we are initiating a trend reversal and making a significant contribution to the success of the energy transition," emphasizes Martin Wagner, Managing Director of VERBUND Energy4Business GmbH. "VERBUND is fully focused on the future of energy: VERBUND plans to install a total of 1 GW of battery storage capacity by the end of 2030."

"A smart energy future in Germany depends on the integration of flexible storage options. Battery storage systems are not only key components for the stability and flexibility of the electricity grid, but also decisive drivers for sustainable energy solutions and the energy transition as a whole," says Florian Antwerpen, one of the Managing Directors of Kyon Energy.

Kyon Energy and VERBUND have already worked together in the past and realized several projects. For example, the VERBUND storage facilities in Iphofen and Diespeck in Bavaria, each with a storage capacity of 20 megawatts, were put into operation at the beginning of 2023.

VERBUND is Austria's leading energy company and one of the largest producers of electricity from hydropower in Europe. The company generates around 96 percent of its electricity from renewable energy sources, primarily hydropower. VERBUND trades electricity in 12 countries and, with around 3,700 employees, achieved a Group result of around EUR 1,700 million and EBITDA of around EUR 3,160 million in 2022. With subsidiaries and partners, VERBUND is active in everything from electricity generation and transportation to international trading and sales. VERBUND has been listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange since 1988 and 51% of the share capital is held by the Republic of Austria.

VERBUND is the key player for the success of the energy transition in Austria. The challenges that lie ahead require the entire company to take a unified approach, which VERBUND is driving forward with Mission V. Mission V is a long-term and comprehensive transformation program and stands for the will to confront the climate crisis as a force for change. This program is based on the VERBUND Strategy 2030 with its three main thrusts: Strengthening the integrated home market, expanding renewable energies in Europe and establishing ourselves as a European hydrogen player. With Mission V, VERBUND is accelerating the achievement of the 2030 strategic goals and ensuring their implementation. Further information:
